Dr. Yongwei Wu

Since 2005, I am an associate professor of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, TsinghuaUniversity, Beijing, China. Currently, I am also the deputy director of the Institute of High Performance Computer (IHPC). From 2002 to 2004, I was a postdoctoral fellow of the Institute of High Performance Computer after I received the Ph.D degree from China Academy of Science in 2002.

I have chaired and participated in some research projects, which are respectively supported by the “863” project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Education of China, the Development and Reform Commission of China, the Sixth Framework Programme of European Union, etc. I have also involved in the development of the three major Chinese national-wide grids and their corresponding middlewares: the China National Grid (CNGrid), the ChinaGrid, and the NSFC Grid. From 2004 to 2006, I acted as the leader of the development team of the ChinaGrid Support Platform (CGSP).

I have published more than 40 research papers, many of which were published in international journals and conferences, and also obtained or applied for 6 patents (2 approvals). I received the Scientific and Technology Progress Award (Tier I) from the Ministry of Education of China in 2007 and the National Scientific and Technology Progress Award (Tier II) in 2008. I have been on the program, steering, or organization committees of some international conferences such as ICPP, Grid Middleware, CCGrid, etc. I have been involved in projects with companies such as HP, Lenovo, IBM, Intel, and EMC, etc.

My research interests mainly focus on parallel and distributed processing and grid computing, which include:

  • Course-grained/Service oriented/Component Based Programming over Distributed System/Grid
  • Legacy Code Wrapping for Distributed System/Grid
  • Distributed Data Processing over Internet
  • Storage Resource Broker or Distributed Data Management over Internet
  • Construction and Management of Flexible Computing Cloud
  • Grid Middleware Architecture and Development
  • Distributed Database Integration and Efficient Query over Internet

PERSONAL NOTES

I was born in a small village, located in the northwest of China, Jingyuan, Gansu. Until now, I just realized that the culture of the village has an undeniable contribution to the establishment of my personal philosophy and attitude in everyday life.

I spent the most beautiful 5 years (four-year undergrad and one-year grad) of my life in LanzhouUniversity, though I was not a good student J. Lanzhou Univ. is a famous university; however its geographical location determines that it is relatively closed with respect to its academic education, research, and even students’ view to the outside of the world, to compare with other universities located in big cities.

I was privileged to have Dr. Wenjun Wu as my Ph.D supervisor, who is a famous mathematician and an academician at the ChineseAcademy of Sciences (CAS). His enthusiasm and passion of research has influenced my academic and research career in many ways. I must say that I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Dongdai Lin and Dr. Zhibin Li as my actual Ph.D advisor and M.Sc advisor respectively, who have supervised me to accomplish a platform of symbolic computation, which is the topic of my Ph.D thesis and a research topic that I have instilled a lot of my research passion into. Dr. Lin has influenced and inspired my personal and professional life in many ways.

I always try to instill the philosophy of teaching and researching that I have learnt from Dr. Wu and Dr. Lin into my graduate students’ minds. I enjoy the process of learning from and interacting with students. By doing this job, I can find my energy and motivation. It is also a great feeling to see students growing into an independent and talented engineers and researchers
